Egan’s Frenchie Euro Nymph
Egan’s Frenchie is a must-have for Euro and tightline anglers. It’s quick to tie, highly versatile, and consistently productive. This is one of the first flies I tie on for most outings, and it often stays as my point fly all day. Whether you fish it solo, as a dropper in a tandem rig, or paired with another nymph, the Frenchie gets trout everywhere.
Why It Works
The Frenchie has all the elements trout respond to: a slim profile, subtle Coq de Leon tail movement, a dyed pheasant-tail body, copper-wire ribbing, and a vibrant hotspot behind the bead. It behaves like a natural mayfly or small aquatic nymph while still fishing fast enough for modern Euro and tightline techniques.
Three Weights. Same Fly. Different Job.
Each Frenchie is tied on the same Firehole 516 Jig Stick using the same proven materials. The only difference is bead size, and that difference is everything on the water.
Available Weight Options:
Heavy – 3.5mm Firehole Slotted Tungsten Bead
Best for deep runs, fast current, and high water where getting down quickly matters.
Medium – 3.0mm Firehole Slotted Tungsten Bead
The workhorse option for standard runs when you need steady bottom contact without excessive ticking.
Light – 2.5mm Firehole Slotted Tungsten Bead
Ideal for shallow water, soft seams, and low, clear conditions where a subtle drift triggers more takes.
These flies may look nearly identical in hand, but they fish very differently. Choosing the right weight often matters more than choosing the right pattern.
Versatility Across Seasons and Water Types
Fishable in a range of hook and bead sizes, the Frenchie works in riffles, pools, and deeper runs. Its movement and color contrast fool even selective trout, while its quick sink allows you to cover water efficiently. It’s a pattern that belongs in every serious fly box.
Built to Last
This fly is tied with durable materials and quality techniques. Rocks and snags may claim it, but trout rarely will. Each fly is tied for consistency and performance you can trust.
