Fly Fishing Gear

Tippet Material/Tippet Rings

Nylon tippet material is your best option for dry fly fishing. Nylon floats and is more flexible than fluorocarbon. So it helps provide a more natural drift for flies floating on the surface.

Fluorocarbon tippet material is your best option for fishing subsurface. It has a faster sink rate and is more durable than nylon. The best value is in the Seaguar products. You get a lot more material than you do with Trouthunter, but you can only get Seaguar in 4 lb (5X) and 6 lb (4X). If you go with Seaguar, you can spool it onto smaller spools to make it easier to carry in your vest.

Tippet Rings are small, very strong and lightweight, and make rigging and tippet replacement fast and easy. Just tie the tippet ring to a leader with a clinch knot, and then add the required tippet in the same way.

Leaders/Leader Material

Trout Hunter tapered leaders are the best option if you are not interested in making your own leaders.

Euro nymphing leaders made by RIO and Scientific Angler are fantastic options if you do not want to make your own euro leader. They come with a built in sighter and a tippet ring. These are awesome if you are just getting started with euro nymphing.

If you are into making your own leaders, Maxima Chameleon and Ultragreen material will help you get started. Sunset Amnesia is an amazing material, as it has not memory and will not coil up on you. Many leader formulas call for both Maxima and Amnesia materials.

Sighter Material

Sighter material is an essential component of the euro nymphing leader set up. You can purchase it in a variety of diameters. Above are links to RIO 2-Tone Sighter Material in 1X, 2X & 3X.

Floating Fly Lines

Both RIO and Orvis options are great all around floating fly lines. They are both weight forward lines and have welded loops to easily attach your leader. Don’t forget the backing!

Euro Nymphing Lines

Euro fly lines are much lighter than a traditional floating fly line. It’s best to use these lines with a Euro Nymphing Rod. The light euro line will not sag in your guides and cause your nymphs to drag. The Euro Nymph Shorty is a great option too. It is a short segment of euro line that you can attach to your floating line. You can easily remove it if you want to change back to fish dries.

Fly Reels

Lamson Fly Reels are a great value! You can spend a lot more on a reel if you want. I have been using the Lamson Liquid reels for all my rods. They are terrific quality for the money. I only make recommendations on what I have used myself. So if you don’t want to break the bank on a reel, I don’t think you can go wrong with a Lamson Liquid.

Fly Rods

The purpose of the TroutStrike.com Fly Shop is to centralize all of the products that I reference in the articles. I only recommend products or brands that I use. When it comes to rods, there are so many different options out there. I truly don’t feel like I can make recommendations. All of my rods are custom built by Mr. Ant’s Rods. I’m lucky enough to be friends with Rich Steinhart, owner of Mr. Ant’s Rods. I have tied him a lot of TroutStrike Flyz in exchange for some pretty sweet rods.

When it comes to rods, I think you just have to find what works for you. There is such a range in price and function with rods, that I can’t even begin to make recommendations. If you pinned me down and asked me if I could only have one rod, what would it be? I would go with a 9 or 10 foot 4 weight rod. I really only fish for trout. So that size rod would give me the versatility I needed.

Fly Fishing Accessories

Polarized Sunglasses

Polarized Sunglasses are almost as important as your rod and reel. Vision is everything on the water. Costa Del Mar glasses with the sunrise lenses are amazing because you can wear them in any light conditions. They will make the darkest days brighter and maximize your visibility on the water.

Fly Fishing Tools

I recommend products and brands that I use myself. Loon Outdoors fly fishing tools are high quality.

Nets & Release Tools

Fishpond Nets are a little salty, but you will have one for life if you buy it. I went through so many cheap nets until I finally bit the bullet and got a Fishpond. I’ll never need to buy another net. I also keep a Lamson Ketchum Release Tool on a zinger on my pack. These are outstanding in the winter when you don’t want to get your hands wet! They are great for quick releases, especially for smaller trout. You don’t even need to handle the fish. You simply slide the tool down you leader and unhook the fish.

Fly Tying Lighting

The Alert Bench lights are amazing. They can be moved in any direction and produce powerful LED light to see the finest details as you tie. I struggled with an old desk light before investing in one of these. They are truly worth the money.
