Why Vision is Your Most Critical Piece of Fly Fishing Gear
I have never been much for brand loyalty. When it comes to fly fishing, I simply want the gear that works the best for the job at hand. For years, I wore Costa sunglasses. They offered quality lenses, specifically the Sunrise Silver Mirror for low-light conditions. Unfortunately, they would inevitably end up at the bottom of the river. If you happen to find a nice pair of sunglasses this summer when the flows drop, just assume they are mine. Thanks to Tajima Direct, I hope to no longer have this problem.

For anglers, polarized lenses are not just a nice thing to have. They are an essential piece of equipment. Our vision is the primary tool we use to read water, track a sighter, and spot fish. Without polarized lenses, the river becomes a surface of glare that makes already camouflaged trout even harder to spot. Polarized lenses help us see everything happening beneath the surface. They are equally as vital to our success as the flies we tie or the rod we choose. If you have perfect vision or need prescription lenses, Tajima Direct can provide a better visual experience on the water.
The Challenge of Aging Eyes and the Need for Magnification

As my eyes have aged, magnification for close work has become even more important than polarization itself. Forgetting my magnifiers now is as problematic as forgetting my rod or waders. I simply can’t tie my flies on without them. Last year (when I dropped my readers in the river), I spent a full day fishing a woolly bugger because it was the only bug in my box with an eye big enough to see. I spent years swapping between polarized frames and readers while out on the water. That constant switching is why I dropped so many pairs into the current (not to mention, I’m a klutz).
A High Performance Solution with Tajima Direct
I originally sought out Tajima Direct to find a solution to my frustration with constantly losing eyewear. What I discovered was the highest level of optical clarity on the market. By offering high-performance lens replacements for the frames you already own, they provide a unique service for anglers.
The Tajima Direct All-In-One Progressive Lens System
For those of us who struggle with near vision, progressive prescriptions build the necessary magnification directly into the lenses. It creates an all-in-one system that has completely eliminated the need to swap sunglasses with readers when on the water. This keeps my glasses on my face and my fly in the water, providing the visual edge needed to track a sighter in any light.
I initially looked into getting progressive prescription sunglasses from my eye doctor. To get those same Costa Sunrise Silver Mirrors in a progressive script would have cost me around $700. I was not willing to pay that much for a single pair of glasses.
That is when I found Tajima Direct. Even when my sunglasses do not end up at the bottom of the river, they often end up scratched from years of hard use. This is where the lens replacement service is a paradigm shift. You get to keep the frames you already own and love, but you give them a second life with superior optics.

I had an old pair of Costa frames sitting in a drawer with badly beaten-up lenses.I sent those in and had them install the Yellow Green 40 Silver Mirror lenses. They used my existing progressive prescription, making the process incredibly easy. They sent me a box for my frames, I mailed it back, and in about two weeks, my old frames returned like new. The communication throughout the process was exceptional. I received updates at every step, and the total cost was a flat, all-inclusive fee of $450. That is a massive savings compared to the price at a doctor’s office. Better yet, if you don’t need a prescription, custom sunglass lens replacement will only set you back $99.

Improving Fishing Experience with Tajima Direct Lenses
The cost is a great selling point, but the experience on the water is what actually matters the most. My lenses are modern, no-line multifocal progressives. The Tajima digital lens design offers a smooth transition from distance vision at the top to near-vision magnification at the bottom. This completely eliminates the need to switch between sunglasses and readers. I can easily switch from reading water to tying on a size 20 zebra midge.

As an angler who spends most of my time Euro nymphing, I constantly change flies and adjust my weight. Not having to swap glasses feels like going back 20 years to when my younger eyes did not need any help. This has drastically improved my efficiency on the water. (And I haven’t dropped any more glasses in the river).
The optical clarity is superior to anything I have used before. When I am reading my sighter, my tri-color indicator mono really pops. The glare virtually disappears. I can see every nook, cranny, and seam in the river. Hiding places where trout lie become more visible than ever.
The Best Lens Colors for Variable Light Conditions

The Yellow Green 40 Silver Mirror lenses are what truly set them apart. While other low-light lenses I have used were great for dawn or dusk, I usually had to switch them out by mid-morning. I do not find myself doing that with the Tajima lenses.
These lenses are incredibly versatile. They work perfectly in the early mornings, evenings, and even on partly sunny days. I find they are more than enough for most of my time on the water. The only time I feel the need to change them is on those bright, high sun, bluebird days. (Trout don’t like those days anyway.) For those specific conditions, I am already planning to purchase a second pair with the Copper Rose 15 Silver Mirror lenses. The silver mirror on that specific tint reflects more light away from the lens, making it darker and more comfortable for bright conditions on the water.
For anglers fortunate enough not to need a prescription, Tajima Direct offers the same lens replacement service, with the same polarized lens technology, fly-fishing tints, and colors in non-prescription lenses. The quality of the optics remains the same for both those with perfect vision and those who rely on corrective lenses (like me).
Technical Stuff
Some progressive lenses cause the swim effect, a disorienting sensation where your peripheral vision seems to sway or rock as you move your head. Tajima Direct handles that in a few important ways. They offer only the highest quality digital lens designs, materials, and coatings. They also require your exact prescription and important details such as Pupillary Distance and an accurate Segment Height, measured specifically with the frame you will use in the worn position on your face. This ensures the prescription sweet spots are exactly where they should be for you. Although these details sound technical, the measurement process is quick and simple. My local eye doctor gathered everything I needed in less than five minutes. Tajima Direct’s experts will also walk you through each measurement if you need any help. Just ask!
I felt fully confident wading in the river from the first moment I put them on. Tracking a sighter requires high contrast and consistent color. Tajima Direct lenses provide that clarity without the distortion found in cheaper optics. When you aren’t fighting glare or squinting to find your line, you can actually focus on your drift.

My Recommendation: Give Tajima Direct a Try
For the first time in years, I am not constantly reaching for my neck or fumbling with extra frames while standing in the current. I can focus entirely on my presentation without worrying about dropping another expensive pair of glasses into the abyss.
The river has claimed enough of my gear over the last three decades. With Tajima’s all-in-one system, my donation days are officially over. I am fishing more efficiently, seeing more fish, and, most importantly, enjoying my time on the water without the frustration of having to swap readers. If you are looking to give your favorite frames a second life with the best optics available, I cannot recommend this service enough.
